What a resume is for

A resume is not your life story. It is a short evidence packet that answers three questions for a hiring manager: what role you want, what you have already done that is relevant, and whether you are worth interviewing.

Strong resumes are skimmable in under 30 seconds. That means one page for most candidates, obvious section labels, and bullets that highlight outcomes”not job descriptions copied from an old posting.

Pick the right format

Most professional applications use a reverse-chronological layout: newest role first, then older roles, then education and skills. Recruiters expect this order because it shows career progression clearly.

One page is the default. Use two pages only when you have 10+ years of directly relevant experience and every line earns its place.
  • Single column ” easiest to read and safest for applicant tracking systems (ATS).
  • Consistent dates ” same style everywhere (e.g. Jan 2022 “ Present).
  • Standard fonts ” Arial, Calibri, or similar; 10“12 pt body text.
  • PDF export ” unless the employer asks for Word or a form.

Contact header

Place your name and best contact methods at the top. Keep it minimal: name, phone, email, city or region, and one professional link (LinkedIn or portfolio).

Skip photos, full street addresses, and personal details that do not affect hiring (marital status, age, etc.) in most North American markets.

Professional summary

The summary is optional but useful when you are changing careers or need context in two or three lines. Write it for the role you are pursuing, not your entire career history.

Formula: [Years of experience] + [specialty] + [proof or scope]. Example: “Marketing manager with 7+ years leading demand generation for B2B SaaS teams. Managed $1M+ annual budgets and cross-functional launches.”

If your work experience already tells the story, you can omit the summary and use the space for stronger bullets.

Work experience

This section carries the most weight. List each role with company, title, location (or Remote), and dates. Under each role, use bullets”not paragraphs.

Write bullets that show impact

Use the pattern: Action + context + measurable result. Lead with the verb, name the tool or audience when it matters, and add a number when you can.

Weak

Strong
